Biar is an inland town in the province of Alicante where you can enjoy our wonderful Mediterranean temperatures, and the distance from the coast is about forty minutes. Biar is crowned by a XIIth Century Muslim castle, and it has been for ages a strategic place as a frontier. If you have a walk, you will have the opportunity to visit its gothic chapels, The Ethnographic Museum, the parish church or the very well known “Paseo del Plátano”.

The location of this town is ideal to visit many other places in the Alto Vinalopó as it is, especially, the well known Route of the Castles; this route includes among others Villena, Castalla and Sax fortresses. You can also visit the “Villena Treasure”, some toy museums in Ibi, the “Casa de las estrellas”(House of the stars) in Benejama... .

The design of the streets denotes the clear muslim origin of its population; In fact, its muslim roots are clear if we see the town’s name: Biar comes from the arabic word “Biyar” which means “well” or “pit”.

Biar, as a frontier, it played a decisive role in the Christian conquest of the ancient Kingdom of Valencia. Jaume I of Aragón conquered the Muslim castle in February 1245, after a six month blockade. In 1370, the king “Pedro el Ceremonioso” declared the castle as a property of the new crown.
