Biar is a town rich in traditions, and it has always preserved these customs thanks to its festivals and processions. The most important festival in this special town is the well known “Fiesta de Mayo” (“May Festival”) in honour of “La Virgen de Gracia”, which recalls the Christian battles against the Arab invasion. At night, on a special day, hundred of bonfires are lit on the hills all around the town. This ritual is in honour of the Virgin.

The processions are carried out in the summer time, and the centre of its attraction are five chapels. Those chapels were built by Jaume I at the camps where his troops rested, during the time of the Muslim blockade. After six months, Jaume I managed to conquer the castle. Nowadays, traditional dances and games are carried out on that particular day.

....

•"Rei Paixaro"

The ceremony is carried out in January the previous Sunday before San Antoni’s day, or the Sunday after that celebration. On Saturday, there is a procession where hundred of torches are taken, informing people that the royal tax collector is coming. This collector is known as the “Rei Paixaro” .

On Sunday, the “Rei Paixaro” walks down the streets, and the people of Biar follow him with many domestic animals or pets, which will recieve his blessing. While the procession is moving forward, everyone offers typical products, which will be auctioned in order to pay the cost of the festival. The day ends with another procession up to the church square.

•"Holy Week"

This festival has as a important ritual, a Way of the Cross and the “Santo Entierro” procession. In this procession and from the VX century, one member of the “Perpiñá” family takes on the “Cristo de la Sala”.

•"Sant Vicent Ferrer" “Anunci de Festes”

It is carried out in April. The day of the festival may depend on the celebration of the Holy Week. In the morning, there is a solemn procession called “Els combregars”, at midday the harquebusiers march shooting harquebuses. Loads of gun powder to announce a close event, the “Moros y Cristianos” festival.

•May Festival, “Moros y Cristianos” (Moors and Christians)

This festival is performed from 10th-13th of March, in honour of “Nuestra Señora de Gracia”. Approximately, six hundred bonfires are lit the first day all over the nearby hills, to accompany the Virgin from the sanctuary on the way down.

The following day (11th of May), the “Els Balls dels Espies” event is celebrated. This ceremony recalls the failed attempts of the exiled Moors (after the battles against Jaume I “The Conquerer”) to reconquer the fortress and Biar square, which were set in the “Raval” neighbourhood. The music and compositions played in this event with traditional instruments, such as the“dolçaina” (an instrument similar to a clarinet) and “tabalet” (a tabor), goes back to XIII century.

During those days (11th-13th) several parades and acts are carried out in Biar about the “Moros y Cristianos” fightings. Most of them are “watched” closely by a big traditional figure called “La Mahoma”
.
